Disappear at least 1 hour a day (build your dream life with deep work)

Doaily

I made this app because I wanted to share the to-do list system that has helped me stay accountable and get things done.

Download Doaily

Disappear for at least 1 hour a day.

Not to binge Netflix.

Not to scroll endlessly through your phone.

But to build the life you’ve been dreaming of.

This is about deep work. The kind of work that brings results.

It's a concept from Cal Newport’s book Deep Work, which defines it as the ability to focus without distraction on cognitively demanding tasks.

And it's super rare nowadays because distractions are everywhere.

There's infinite content out there that wants our attention and so we're easily distracted.

We're losing the ability to focus. The focus needed to actually create something meaningful and bring our dream lives into reality.

But, the good news is that focus is a skill. And like any skill, it can be trained.

//How to build a deep work routine

1. Schedule a time for deep work

Pick a time when you’re least likely to be interrupted.

For me, I like to schedule deep work early in the morning because that's when everyone's asleep and so there are less distractions.

But, it doesn’t matter if it’s early morning, late at night, or during your lunch break. What matters is that it’s free from interruptions.

In the beginning, aim for something like 30 minutes of uninterrupted work and gradually build up from there. And that should be easy right? If you and I can work long hours in a day for some other company, we can definitely commit at least some time working for our dream lives.

Just got to start.

2. Eliminate distractions

We're talking physical and digital distractions.

The fewer things competing for your attention, the more deeply you’ll be able to focus.

Clearing physical distractions is straightforward.

Clear your workspace of any clutter or objects that might pull your attention away.

If your workspace is tidy, your mind will be too.

Digital distractions are something else.

It’s easy to get sidetracked by notifications, messages, and social media.

I find that straight up deleting social media apps off of my phone makes the biggest difference. I'll only download it when I need to post something and can't do it on the web version.

And the less intense way is to put your phone on do not disturb mode during deep work, allowing only certain groups of people to call you. Everything and everyone else is silenced.

You can also use app blockers or browser extensions to temporarily block websites that tend to distract you.

...just anything to create an environment where the only thing you can do is focus on what you need to be doing to get you your dream life.

It's a fight.

The fewer things competing for your attention, the deeper you’ll be able to work.

3. Track and reflect on your progress

Tracking and reflecting on your progress is crucial because this is the future we’re talking about.

You need to know if what you’re doing is actually working.

It's easy to set goals and assume they'll get you where you want to go (this is a mistake I've been making).

But, as soon as you put in the work, things change. What you thought would work might not give you the results you expected.

So, that's why tracking your progress and reflection is important. You need to be constantly iterating, pivoting, and realigning yourself toward your goals.

Without this step, you're kind of just guessing, and you can get stuck working hard without making real progress.

This step, ensures that you’re not just busy and that you're actually moving closer to what you want.

And that's how I'm working toward my dream life with a deep work routine.

  • I block out time for the work that I need to put in
  • I remove distractions for the session
  • I use my own progress as motivation and realignment

That's it for this one :)
